Empowering Grenadians to engage with and drive environmental governance
Our latest project
St. George’s, Grenada. February 2025. The Grenada Land Actors Inc. (GLA) is strengthening environmental advocacy at the community level through an innovative project funded by the Fund for International and Multilateral Advocacy (FIMA) and the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI). This initiative has three primary objectives: increase public awareness and understanding of environmental laws and rights in Grenada; strengthen community participation in environmental decision-making; and empower citizens to take an active role in environmental governance by training them as community monitors.
One key output of this project will be the Environmental Action Toolkit—a comprehensive resource designed to help citizens to access, interpret, and apply information on natural resource management in Grenada. The toolkit will feature user-friendly guides, practical templates, real-world case studies, and many more resources tailored to the unique needs of Grenadian communities, equipping citizens with everything they need to drive meaningful environmental action.
CANARI, one of our funders which is based in Trinidad, is happy to support this project.
“Amplifying voices from the frontlines of the climate and biodiversity crises and enhancing local communities influence on policy and practice is key,” Dr. Ainka Granderson, Resilience Programme Manager, shared about CANARI’s position. “This is why the Institute is excited to support grassroots advocacy and action in Grenada to improve environmental governance through the Climate Action Grant Facility under our Caribbean Sea Innovation Fund (CarSIF).”
GLA will be bringing this project to life throughout 2025 with an exciting lineup of townhall meetings, community consultations, and hands-on training workshops. Although efforts are initially centred on Mt. Hartman, La Sagesse, and Levera—communities at the heart of major development projects—this initiative carries far-reaching benefits for all Grenadians. By placing local voices at the forefront of environmental decision-making, the project aims to strengthen climate justice, enhance environmental protection, and inspire a deeper connection to the natural world we all share. This is more than a campaign—it’s a call to action for a sustainable Grenada driven by empowered communities.
“I am thrilled about this exciting new project, bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the table,” is what Saditha Benjamin, member of GLA’s Board, had to say about the project. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to create something truly impactful, and I can’t wait to see it come to life.”
As Grenada and the Caribbean face an uncertain future shaped by the dual challenges of climate change and foreign-led development pressures, initiatives like this stand as a beacon of hope. They are essential to fostering sustainable and equitable development that honours the environment while safeguarding the rights of local communities. Environmental governance is all of our business—a shared mission for us who call Grenada home. This is where we transform awareness into meaningful action, ensuring a resilient future for generations to come.
