Water scarcity is the next big frontier. As climate change increases year-round temperatures (and thus evaporation) and disrupts our regular rainfall patterns (with changes in seasonal rain, more severe droughts, and unpredictable flooding), water resources may become increasingly rare. So what can we as citizens do to conserve water and ensure that this essential resource continues to meet our needs?

Some simple measures you can take are:

  • Turn off the tap when not in use, including while washing dishes, showering, or brushing your teeth

  • Use a watering can instead of a hose to water plants

  • Use a bucket instead of a hose to clean vehicles

  • Opt for a dual-flush toilet, which have low and high flush settings

  • Install a faucet aerator or low-flow shower head

  • Reuse fallen ice to water indoor plants

  • Reuse sink graywater to water garden plants
